The Kakku Pagoda Complex itself was first seen by a westerner in 1996. Though recently discovered by the outside world, for centuries these pagodas have been the personal, intimate place of worship for the Pa O people. The architecture of the pagodas appears to date from the 16th Century and Pa O legend sets the number of the pagodas at 7622.
